Zendikar Pack Per Day Challenge Day 24 and Draw 3 Cards

October 26th, 2009

I haven’t gotten around to posting at all in the last week, but today I have another pack to post. Today’s pack is the fifth duplicate rare pack in a row. I have 12 more packs left to open. Also, the website draw3cards.com. This is a website where you can ask and answer questions about Magic: The Gathering. You will usually get a response quickly, so I do recommend it. (Direct Link)

Zendikar Pack Per Day Challenge Day fifteen

October 18th, 2009

It is past midnight, so it this will be shown as 10/18. If I post day sixteen, it will have the same date as this. This was the best pack I’ve opened so far from this set. (Actually, I can only think of one pack with as much value inside as this pack. And not even a treasure card!)

Zendikar Top Ten and Pack Per Day Challenge Day Thirteen

October 14th, 2009

I didn’t have time to post the packs yesterday or the day before, but I will post today’s pack. Nothing good were in any of the three. (I’ve had bad luck so far with this challenge) Before I post the pack, though, I’m going to post the top ten Zendikar cards. The fetchlands are not on the list because there are five and they are utility cards.

10. Day of Judgement

This is apparently the replacement of Wrath of God. It will probably be used just as often as Wrath because regenerators are not used often. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen one, even in casual games.

9.Harrow

I’ve seen Harrow in use, and it defiantly deserves a place on the top ten list. It triggers landfall twice, plus gives you one free land, for a net loss of only one mana. (The two lands come into play untapped) Sure, it can be countered, and then you’re in trouble, but anything can be countered, and the benefits of successfully resolving this usually outweigh the cost and the risk.

8. Ob Nixilis, the Fallen

If this creature is able to survive one turn, it will be out of range any single burn spell. You can play a land right after you play it also. (And because of the priority system, you can play the land before your opponent has a chance to respond) This creature will immediately deal 3 damage and get 3 +1/+1 counters. If you play harrow, that’s 6 damage. It will also be the instant target of any removal, allowing your other big creatures to survive longer.

7. Scute Mob

Scute Mob, while it isn’t as good at surviving, can do more damage if it does. Growing by +5/+5 per turn is huge, even if it doesn’t have trample. The problem is that Scute Mob will be either killed or chump blocked every time.

6. Summoning Trap

This card is definitely worth it. If you play a big creature and it gets countered, you still have a chance of getting out a big creature. If not, it is playable for 6 mana.

5. Rampaging Baloths

This creature is a creature that I think is better than Broodmate Dragon. Because, again, of the priority system, you can play a land before your opponent has a chance to destroy this. That means that for 6 mana, you can have a 6/6 and a 4/4. It can be played using mana of only one color, It has +2/+2 more than broodmate, and if you’re lucky, it can make more than one 4/4. The only downside is the lack of flying, but in my opinion, it’s still better.

4. Vampire Nighthawk

Nighthwak has the potential to keep a whole army at bay for a few turns. It’s a 3 mana creature that will kill you if it doesn’t die soon.

3. Warren Instigator

Notice the double strike. That means that you get to put 2 goblins from your hand into play each time it hits your opponent. It’s another kill or be killed creature, although it is very vulnerable to removal and being blocked by anything with over 2 toughness.

2. Goblin Guide

This is a 2/2 for one. With haste. There isn’t much else to say about it.

1. Lotus Cobra

This might only be a 2/1, meaning it dies to removal, but it is still the best card in Zendikar. If it manages to survive, you get more mana accel than you’ll know what to do with.

Lets see…

June 6th, 2009

I’m going to see if I can guess what Timeshifted cards are going to be in Zendikar block and Maybe a few M10(11th edition wizards what are you thinking?!). If you don’t know what Timeshifted cards are they were released in the Future Sight set and they are “sneak peeks” of future sets! Except one card. Ill show you that junk rare in a little bit though.

Now lets check out the new abilities magic is probably going to bring in with the next 4 sets.

barufistofkrosa

One new Keyword is probably going to be Grandeur. Grandeur is on 5 cards in the future sight set I personally think that these cards are going to be in M10. It might be in one of the Zendikar sets bet I’d put my money on M10. Now what Grandeur does is it makes it so that if you have another card of the same name in your hand you can discard it and get a great effect. This one allows you to make a huge wurm creature that will help in almost any deck. The bad part about this is that all Grandeur cards (In future Sight there’s 5) are all rares. So this will be a totally useless card in limited but could make standard get a little more annoying.

Now that is the only Keyword I think that M10 will have. So I might as well tell you the Junk rare now. It is Steamflogger Boss. It was released by Wizards that it is just a 1x card that wont have “supporting cards” to make it a good card. What would be very nice is if they accidentally make some cards to help this card they have don’t it many times in the past and hopefully will do it in the future as well.

steamfloggerboss

Now for a few cards/abilities I think I’ll be in the Zendikar sets.

bladeofthesixthpride

A few cards that have low mana cost and no effect. There are a few in the Future Sight set but they might make more. I wouldn’t really like these cards because, Hey, I’d much rather have a new Exotic effect than a small card.

Now this is going to be fun in limited there are going to be a few “Changing” cards that switch a creature or aura ,etc this is going to be so much fun!

First card,

arcanumwings

See Aura swap this is going to get extremely fun using this card and do I really have to explain what this card would be good at?…no?… Gooood,

Now the next “Change” Card is:

fleshwrither

Now That is a fun card. It says if Zach has one in his zombie deck no one can beat him. Calvin knows my zombie deck works great I don’t always get the 4 mana cards I want like Zombie Warlord (something like that) Or Soulless one. This is just going to get so messed up if they make some more with 3 cards or others…

Now that I’m done with the “Change” Cards they are going to make a few Fortified Lands Check this out…

darksteelgarrison

Now I don’t know if this will be in the Zendikar sets or in a later set like 12 edition or whatever stupid name they call it… Or the set after that I’m not too sure about this card because well you see the Darksteel in the name. Darksteel was a “Keyword” in the darksteel set. Every card with Darksteel in its name was indestructible. I hope they bring this back because this will help against the huge amount of removal that they had in the SoA block.

Remember this is just a list of assumptions that I made. I’m really sure that all thees cards are going to appear in in an extremely soon block/set. Also this isn’t even close to all the cards/effects released in future sight. Please comment on you opinion and I might make another post about this.

EDIT (By Calvin): Zach, it’s spelled Zendikar, not Zandifare. I just went through the entire post fixing it every time, along with all of your other spelling errors. (To readers: If you see any spelling mistakes, leave a comment. Maybe you can get Zach to proofread his posts better than I can.)

How to tell if a card is good/costs alot

April 13th, 2009

Hi zach here sorry for not being able to post I was enjoyng myself in sanfransisco, calafornia well a mater of fact I’m still there. Well this is how to tell if a cards good:

If it is balanced , they tend to go by a standard like this: (I found this out for only creatures for now)

-If the power/toughness is 1/1 it would cost (1), and so on for the power and toughness, and if the creature is like a 1/3 balance it out that makes a 2/2. or if the creature is a 3/7 that makes a 5/5 or if it is a 1/4 that would be a 2/3 then count that as either (3) mana or (4) mana if it counts as 3 then it is good (excluding no other effects) and if it is 4 it is usually bad (excluding other effects)

If a creature power/toughness is 1/1 and it has another effect it usually costs (2) FOR JUST THE POWER/TOUGHNESS

-For each effect like a named effect- flying, trample, first strick, devour, ect… it will add (1) to the converted mana cost.

-If the creature has a mixed effect like- all creatures get +1/+1, when this comes into play destroy all creatures, when this creature attacks target creature losses flying, ect… thies will usually add (2) per mana cost.

-If the creature costs multiple mana it usually costs (1) less per extra mana, (1) colorless.

-If the creature has a negetive effect like: When this comes into play sacrifice a land, when this comes into play discard a card, whenever a player plays a spell or an ability on this creature sacrifice it, ect… The creature will cost (2) less mana.

This is usually how so a 3/3 for (4) would be normal and a 3/3 for (4) with flying is a good card and a 3/3 for (5) would be bad and ect,

Now to tell if a creature is good for standard is if it fits into the both the blocks that are in standard now a card would be good for both the shards of alara block and the morningtide/shadowmoor blocks.

Another way to show if a card would be good it would be good in any deck not just in a specific few.  Like banefire works for almost any deck while progenitus would only be good in a deck made for it.

A card would be bad if it can only be used in a deck that works for that card.

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Now to tell if a card would cost alot is if it is good for one, using the balance method

It would cost something If it works in standard, otherwise it wont cost too much

If it has high power and toughness. ALOT of noobs like cards that are just sheer power no matter if it costs 1000000 to play they will put it into thier deck. usually something that has high power and toughness is 6/6 or higher.

If a card is good in a combo it would cost more or if the card is good in a set (usually 5) it would cost alot like the scarab set.

–That is all this has worked for me but you are not limited to this if something else has worked for you please let me know by e-mail czmtgblog@gmail.com or post a comment… which is hopefully a few lines below this last sentance.

What 8(or 9) plainswalkers can do:

March 4th, 2009

Calvin and I were playing a game and I was going to win, I was using my plainswalker deck that has evry plainswalker exept for elspeth. So I said can we play and let me get all my plainswalkers out and use thier best – effects. So after a few turns I get the other 4 plainswalkers I didnt need out and this is what I did:  -Note- I say 8 plainswalkers because If you have two plainswalkers with the same name in the typebox they are both destroyed. Hence Agani vengent and goldmane. During this I used goldmane:

Now if you had these 8 plainswalkers:

Jace-

423a_jacebeleren_mit0w2

Chandra-

chandra_nalaar

Ajani goldmane-

423a_ajanigoldmane_txkkc5

Guruk-

garruk_wildspeaker

Liliana-

uwr3tlilianavess

Tezzeret-

tezzeret20the20seeker

Nicol Bolas plainswalker DUN DUN DUN…..-

nicol-bolas-plainswalker

Sharken Vol (fav its just so much fun!)-

sarkhan_vol2

Lastly lovly Elspeth I did not use her but this is the card and what I would have done anyway:-

elspeth_knight-errant

and you could use all thier best – effects you should do them in this order.

1: Ajani goldmane -(or Vengent If being used) you put a insanly big create/Insanly big creature into play (or with vengent you destroy all lands they control and make them helpless)

2:Chandra- Just burn them and thier creatures for 10 so they cannot block or if they have some insanly big guy like Apoclips hydra or Krosan cloud Scrapper out they will be alot easier to kill. Also you get creatures in the graveyard.

3:Nicol bolas plainswalker- Use this after chandra to destroy more creatures/permanents and get more crap into the graveyard and If your opponent is lucky they will be at 3 If not you won so you dont need to keep reading.

4:Jace- Another nice plainswalker deck them for 20 and if thier lucky (again) they will still have cards left. Yes this is another thing to set up for Vess

5:Liliana- It is time redeem all your lost creatures for a last shot at survival It will be nice to see the look on your opponents face when you do this!

6: Tezzeret-  Turn all thoes noncreature artifact creatures and wimpy artifact creatures into 5/5 killing mecs!

7:Guruk- Needless to explain make all those lovly creatures into 3/3 tramplers of death!

8:Elspeth- Use her nice all those huge things become unstoppable effect!

9:Sharken Vol- Lastly for all those who are screaming: ARE YOU AN IDIOT?! WHAT ABOUT THE DRAGONS? I gotcha! Use Sharken’s +1 effect so all those monstrosities can attack this turn and become alittle stronger and If you dont win the game after this… I pitty you!

I did do it this way because I did’nt have Elspeth but I did evrything else so f you some how get out almost all the plainswalkers to date then do it this way you will win, also NOTE: you will have alot of plainswalkers that take up most of the field dont forget one!

Random Luck

February 22nd, 2009

Luck seems to play into this game, sometimes as much or more than skill. A random pick off the top of the library can win you the game (Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker) while a random pick off your opponent’s library can change the tide of the game completly. (Cruel Ultimatum) There are some games where you need that one last land to win. If it’s on top you win. If not, you lose. I seem to have very bad luck as far as pulling what I need off the top of the deck, or pulling a random combo out of thin air that nobody has seen before.

Everyone at some point has bought and cracked a random booster pack. I seem to get lucky more often than not. I get good ($10+) raress, but not mythics. Zach usually gets nothing. (Although yesterday he opened a Nicol Bolas from a single pack.) I got 3 Path to Exiles out of around 20 packs, and Zach got none in the same number. Answer in the poll or in a comment, how is your luck? (For some reason, you need to click the post to be able to see the poll. You can also vote in the sidebar.)

How is your luck opening packs?

Scavenger hunt on Magic website

February 20th, 2009

It looks like WOTC is trying to sneak something past us. They’ve hidden 5 symbols:

around their website that link to a page that says they’re running a scavenger hunt. If you find all 5 planeswalkers and write down the names on the printable page and bring it in to a participating  store (here’s the list), you will get a blue spindown counter:

4 of the 5 planeswlakers are from the Lorwyn block, and the other is from the Shards of Alara block. If you want the names of the planeswalkers, leave me a comment or an email at czmtgblog@gmail.com. To see the comments, click on the post title and scrol down to the bottom of the post.
