Shards of Alara prerelease stories, Visual Spoiler, name of every card in Conflux

September 30th, 2008

Hello! There are a lot of things for me to write about today. First, I’ve updated the prerelease countdown to count down to the Conflux prerelease. Second, I was going to post all of the Shards cards, but Wizards of the Coast has released a visual spoiler, so you’re better off going to that. Third, Zach tells me that he goes through the comments every time he comes on, and I believed him. But today, there were 49 commentS! And, out of those, only one was real! (Coming back to this after the post was written, actually I believe him now, because there were four spam comments as I was writing this.)

Fourth, I have some stories to share from the Shards of Alara prerelease.

It was hard enough to get to the prerelease. My dad drove me, Zach, and Hunter to the hotel that it usually is in, and it wasn’t there! We looked on the computer at the hotel, and we found a store in Wantagh with a prerelease. We printed out the map, and drove there, but it was closed! Hunter wanted to just stay there until opening, but that wasn’t until 11:00! (It was 8:30) We drove home, and tried to find a store that had a good chance of letting us in. We finally found out, around 10:30, that the prerelease was just moved to a different hotel! We got there at 11:30, and found out we had to wait an hour until the next flight started.

We waited the hour, and got in a flight. We got our cards, made our decks, then decided to quit and go into the next flight (which was the last flight of the day) just to get more cards. So, we joined the next flight, got our cards, made out decks, and finally got to play. I opened another Hellkite Overlord (another because I already have one from From the Vault: Dragons) in my tournament pack, along with a mycloth and a few other devour creatures. It was obvious I was going Jund, especially since I also had an Obelisk of Jund and a Jund Panorama. I won my first game, because I overpowered my opponent, but then I lost the other two games of the match to Dragon Fodder and Goblin Assualt.

After that, I put in two Naturalizes into my deck.

I lost my second match to mana problems. I won my third match by mycloth and Hellkite overlord. My fourth match, I won one game to mana problems, then lost one game to mana problems. In the third game, I was able to build up creatures quickly, but my opponent had two Marble Chalices out.

I got him down to 8, and then he got me down to two. After that, there was a standoff for a few turns, where if either one of us attacked, it wouldn’t be enough to finnish off the other, and the other would be able to counterattack and kill the one who attacked first. The game was locked up like that for around 10 turns, and a judge called time. He came over because we were still playing, and let us continue. I got out my Hellkite Overlord. It wasn’t enough. He had one more attacker than I had blocker, and I had only two life. My only chance was if I used Drumhunter to draw a Soul’s Fire.

If I drew it, I could use it to make my Hellkite Overlord do 10 damage to my opponent, killing him, even with his Marble Chalices. (Remember, Hellkite Overlord has R: Hellkite Overlord gets +1/+0 until end of turn.) I had just enough mana to pull it off. (It was late in the game, so Hellkite hadn’t tapped all of my mana.) If life was a movie or book, I would have drawn that Soul’s fire. Too bad it’s not. I drew a swamp and lost to his two attackers.

Now, all of you might be wondering what that last part of this post’s title means. “name of every card in Conflux” Well, it means exactly what it says. There was a website with a list of all cards in Japanese, and it had Conflux cards in it, too! It is, of course, possible that this is all a hoax, but the website took down the card names. It might have gone unnoticed, except that one poster in MtG Salvation noticed it, and posted it there. Here is a link to the post. I also copied the list to a notepad document on my computer, so if it gets taken off of MtGS, I still have it. (it won’t get taken down from there, but it might crash or something like that. Hopefully, it won’t.) You can download it here. Some notable names from this list:
- Nicol Bolas (Planeswalker)

- Nactal Hunt Pride (possibly a mistranslation from Nactal War Pride?)

- Hellkite Hatchling (Hellkite Overlord’s child?)

- Apocalypse Hydra

- Inkwell Leviathan

- Obelisk of Alara

MY (Zachs) Deck

September 28th, 2008

Hi all its Zach The Prereleas was great if you didnt go to one you missed out on alot of fun. First ill tell you the story of how we had to get there. We went to the place we usually go to and the pethetic thing about it is it wasnt thier. so we had to drive back to calvins house look on the computor and we found another place. It was run by the same poeple but it was in a different hotel… so we went there and (and this hotel was nicer) joined a flight. Sadly because wizards made a truly horrible game they had to cut back on the booster drafts and the Pitty Packs (Packs you get just for joining the flight). Like last time Hunter came. I Got 2/0 calvin got 1/3 and hunter got 1/3. Me and Hunter got 3 mythic rares and calvin got 2.

I made a deck around both my mythic rares. I got one of the best ones Sarkhan Vol and once that was good with my devour deck Kresh the Bloodbraided. I have to admit i won 2 out of  4 games (I won) with Vol and his Put 5 4/4 red dragon creature tokens with flying into play.

I also got the Blue Artifact plainswalker witch evryone is telling me that its the best (Bought it for $7) and couldv’e sold it for 25.

Calvin funnely got hellkite overlord and still lost from mana problems. He used a devour deck also. The other mythic rare he got and wht hunter got i forgot he will probobly post what he got.

Also all the cards are superpowerd so it was like clash of the titans.

The Shards of allura Prerealeas WAS GREAT!

Go the the realese

One more Shards of Alara preview card and Prerelease Information

September 26th, 2008

Hello! Only one card for preview today, but it’s a big one. (It’s a 1/1, but it gets big.)

Card 77 (final preview card): Manaplasm

Play a growth spell on it, and it suddenly transforms from a 1/1 to something much bigger. Don’t ask me what, because that depends on the spell, but one spell will make it a 12/12. This is the final preview card before the prerelease. (On Monday, I will be able to post every card, and because of having Tuesday and Wednesday off from school, I might be able to write reviews for a whole bunch of them. (I’d say 30 is my limit.) Don’t count on it, though. But I will post every card.)

Prerelease Info.

The prerelease is taking place at many game stores now, not just the big places, but it still will be happening in the big places, at least in my area. There are bonuses for going to one in a big place:

1. You are pretty much guarenteed to get in. At small places, there is only room for 24 people.

2. There will be judges.

3. Multiple events. The small places only run one event.

4. Two- or three-headed giant.

Everyone who joins a tournament, no matter where, will get a foil Ajani Vengeant.

Tournaments are NOT knockout. You play 4 matches unless you want to drop out. I made that mistake at my first prerelease, and left after one loss.

You will get one tournament pack and three booster packs of Shards of Alara, and you get to make a 40-card or bigger deck out of them.

I suggest three color decks for Shards of Alara, but it depends on your cards.

You do not get to use your foil Ajani Vengeant in the games, but you can use one if you get it from one of the packs.

Anyone who wins three or four out of four rounds will get extra packs. I don’t know about anyone else.

Click here to find out where your nearest prerelease is. If you don’t know your reigon, just click worldwide fact sheet, but you’re much better off finding your specific region, because it’s a much smaler list to search.

If you are in the middle of a tournament, but have to leave, you can just tell the organiser and he won’t pair you against anyone. If you do end up paired against someone, and you’ve left, that person will just get a free win.

Four more Shards of Alara preview cards

September 25th, 2008

Hello! four more cards for you today!

Card 73: Gustrider Exuberant

If you have creatures with power 5 or greater, and they have flying, would you really want to be your opponent? This card should be very fun.

Card 74: Predator Dragon

With a sacrifice of only two creatures, you can have an 8/8 out of nowhere! Zach’s dragon deck is gong to get a big upgrade with this card!

Card 75: Scourglass

This card is not going to destroy your permanents, if they are all Esper’s artifact creatures. Your opponent’s artifacts, though…

Card 76: Viscera Dragger

On the second turn, a free card. On the third turn, a 3/3 that lasts one turn, but that will kill anything your opponent has out by then. Fun, fun…

Nine more Shards of Alara preview cards

September 24th, 2008

I’m sorry I wasn’t able to post yesterday, but I had tons of homework and a doctor appointment. But, today I have yesterday’s cards. I know it’s nothing like Monday’s post, but it’s more than most days. Six of these cards are reprints, which I’ll post first.

Reprints

Card 64: Blaze

Card 65: Giant Growth

Card 66: Goblin Piker

Card 67: Naturalize

I knew there would be something like this in this set, with all those blue artifacts.

Card 68: Rampant Growth

Card 69: Shock

New Cards:

These cards will have “reviews.”

Card 70: Branching Bolt

This card is at least 3, possibly 6, damage for 3 mana at common. I would like to have this card, especially in a deck without much flying. It would be nice in my giants deck, if my giants deck was green.

Card 71: Titanic Ultimatum

You know what this shares colors with? Rhys, the Redemmed! You can already see so many combos with Titanic Ultimatum and Rhys, especially if you throw in a Mirrorweave or two. (You’d also need mana accel, of course.) Remember the Primalcrux? Add this, and as if it wasn’t big enough already, all your creatures get +5/+5, first strike, lifelink, and trample! This won’t work with the Primalcrux/Mirrorweave/Nactal War Pride combo, unfortunatly, because Mirrorweave would erase all the changes from Titanic Ultimatum.

Card 72: Sedris, the Traitor King

This card could be nice, but not as good as Titanic Ultimatum. Although, if used right, this card can be better just because of cost. If you have enough mana, for 3 each, bring back your creatures with comes into play effects,  and attack with them! This card can easily win a game for someone.

There are only two more days of previews, until the full visual spoiler is released on Monday.
