Nicol Bolas

October 28th, 2008

It’s time to look at the most powerful planeswalker in the Magic: the Gathering story. In the game, he hasn’t been as important, and he has one card, printed first in Legends. It was reprinted in Chronicals, Time Spiral, and From the Vault: Dragons. Here it is:

This is Nicol Bolas. It’s a great card. For 8 mana at the beginning then 3 mana per turn (The colors won’t be too hard with the new Shards of Alara mana. Use Grixis.) you get a flying 7/7 that will force your opponent to discard his or her hand. But that’s not why I’m posting about it today. I’m posting because it’s looking more and more like it will not only be in Conflux, but also be a very big part in the story.

1. Nicol Bolas is in Conflux

This was on the confirmed list of all the Conflux cards. It won’t be a reprint, because it will be a planeswalker.

2. There are no planeswalkers for Grixis.

This is obvious. Jund has Sarkhan Vol, Esper has Tezerret, Naya has Ajani Vengant, and Bant has Elspeth. But Grixis has nothing. Guess what colors Grixis has: Blue, black, and red. Guess what colors Nicol Bolas is: Blue, black, red!

3. Cruel Ultimatum

The ultimatums from the other 4 shards all have their planeswalkers in the background. Here’s Cruel Ultimatum:

Now, let’s look at it’s image, blown up to 500×358:

If part of this image is getting chopped off, click it to see the whole thing.

There’s a dragon in there! It’s a huge dragon, eating something! The other 4 ultimatums have been blown up to show the planeswalker responsible for them in Magic Arcana, and here’s this one.

A weird card

October 27th, 2008

Hello! I don’t know where Zach went, but I’m here to talk about a weird card from Planeshift.

Goblin Game:

First, here’s the oracle text, because this is very small.

Each player hides at least one item, then all players reveal them simultaneously. Each player loses life equal to the number of items he or she revealed. The player who revealed the fewest items then loses half his or her life, rounded up. If two or more players are tied for fewest, each loses half his or her life, rounded up.

This card works in a very strange way. First, everyone has to find objects to hide. Be reasonable. They must be small enough to be hidden. You shouldn’t go around the house or tournament site hiding them. Hide them under a cup if you have one for everyone. If you don’t, use a piece of paper and write a number on it, and that will be your number. Make it clear what object you are hiding.

Now, when you have to count them, make sure that you don’t mix up your objects with your opponent’s objects. No sneaking one in after it’s been revealed. If there are any arguments, do it again. Now, everyone loses life equal to the number of objects they hid. Now, the player who revealed the lowest losts half of his or her REMAINING life rounded up. If it’s a tie, both lose half their remaining life. If the first part puts someone bellow 0, they don’t lose until the rest of the effect happens. For example:

Players A and B have a life total of 10.  A hides 9 objects, B hides 10. B loses 10 life, putting him at 0. A loses 9 life putting him at 1. Then, the second half of the spell resolves. A loses half of his remaining life total, roundnd UP. B now has 0 life, also. This results in a draw.

If this spell is played, and both players have 1 or 2 life, the result is an automatic draw.

Combos

October 24th, 2008

The forums we have now are temporary. I have better forums coming that are taking longer to configure. Don’t take too much time there, because once the new forums are up I’m going to stop checking the old forums.
Anyway, now to the combos. My first combo today will destroy a permanent every time you play a creature.

Have out Conspiricy. Chose Scarecrows as the creature type. Now, play this:

Now, not only do your creatures all get +1/+1, but also whenever you play one, you can destroy one of your opponent’s permanents. If you want to add to this combo, you can add Liliana Vess.

When you play the -8 move, you can not only get all destroyed creatures back into play under your control, but also for each creature, you destroy one of your opponent’s permanents!

My second combo will probably win you the game right away, and it only takes two cards.

Have out 4 creatures that can attack and this: (this can be included in the 4 creatures.)

Now, play Mirrorweave!

Now, you have 4 copies of a creature that deals damage to the defending player as though it wasn’t blocked! And they’re all 5/5! Attack for 20 damage, and redirect it all to your opponent. (The amount of creatures can change depending on your opponent’s life total and other factors.)

My third combo kills both you and your opponent, but you survive because of Lich’s Mirror.

First, play Lich’s Mirror:

Then, wait until you have a good amount of mana or are desperate, and play this:

Now, tap 3 black  mana. Then, one at a time (count it out for even more effect.) tap every single one of your landa and mana producing creatures, and sacrifice all the lands.  (Hopefully, you have a number like ’20′ or something like that.) Your opponent should now be cowering in fear. (Unless he/she has a counterspell.)

Now, play this:

You both lose as much life as mana you payed, sacrifice that many permanents, etc… The only difference is if it’s lethal damage for you, everything that you just sacrificed goes straight into your library. If it’s lethal damage for your opponent (or both) you win!

Now, my fourth and final combo. You’ve destroyed all your opponent’s permanents, dealt him 20 damage, and made him discard his hand and sacrifice his lands and creatures. Now it’s time to gain some life. In fact, now it’s time to gain infinite life!

Play judge of Currents:

You can already see where this is going. This does take 3 colors, but it’s white blue and green, so it fits right into any Bant deck. Enchant Judge of Currents with Utopia Vow:

If you expected something like this, good job. You’ve predicted it. Here’s card 3:

Enchant judge of currents with this. Now, tap judge of currents for a blue mana, gaining a life in the process, then use that blue mana to untap it. Repeat as many times as you want for as many life as you want.

Have a good time trying out these combos!

Duel Decks Jace Vs. Chandra

October 16th, 2008

The Duel Decks are based on the planeswalkers Jace Berelen and Chandra Nalaar. The Jace deck is all about counterspell, and the chandra deck is all about burn spells. This set has alternate art for the two planeswalkers plus 6 other cards, and reprints of cards from all 15 years of Magic, and even an expansion symbol. It comes out November 7, 2008.

Alt. Art Cards:
Here are the 8 alternate art cards:

Neat, right? Obviousely, these aren’t the only cards in the decks, but these are some of them. Take the decks apart and use the cards for yourself or play with the decks. Either way, these cards look like they will be fun to play with.
