Combos

November 30th, 2008

Hello! Today I’m going to talk about some more fun combos.

Combo 1: 2/0, 2/0, 2/0, 2/0……

Equip both Merfolk Thaumaturgiest and Serendib Sorcerer with Thornbite Staff. Tap Serendib Sorcerer to make the creature you want to kill a 0/2, then tap Merfolk Thaumaturgiest to make it a 2/0, which kills it immidiately. It goes to the graveyard, and both of your creatures untap, letting you repeat the process until all of your opponent’s creatures are dead, then you can attack and be unblocked.

Combo 2: Draw your deck!

Play Platinum Angel. Play Ad Nauseam. Draw all the cards in your deck. If you didn’t already, play Spellbook. Watch your opponent’s expression. (As long as Platinum Angel stays in play, you’re fine. Just don’t let Platinum Angel die.)

Combo 3: Planeswalker fun

This combo will get you to Jace Beleren’s ultimate ability faster, than double it. It works for any planeswalker, but one of the cards is blue.

Every turn, play Clockspinning and pay the buyback cost. Whhen you hav enough counters, pay 2 to double the ability!

Why I like plainswalkers

November 26th, 2008

Hi its Zach agian do you know why I like PW? I like them for a few resons…

They mess up opponents plans

They opponent usually tries to kill it while so they dont get hit by the big effect

Calvin hates my plainswalkers

Plainswalkers can easily win you the game. During the SoA prerelease I got out my Vol when I had 10 life. The opponent had the stupid {T}: gain 1 life card out two of them and I had a bad defender. Next turn he gained a few life, turn after that he hit me with 4 damage =(. Then it was my turn put on counter # 6 Im starting to tence this was match 2/3 btw and we each had 1/1. I start “misguiding” him by saying how am I suppos to win I have 6 life with 5 mana and having mana problems. He attacks (-4 life down to 2), then he ends his turn with the winners SMILE on his face. Boy you should have seen his face when I used my -6 effect. He started saying that how could i have missed the that! (The Vol had plains to show tokens hard to miss)

I seggest having a plainswalker in the deck. Just to put your opponent on the edge. Its always fun to see the disbelief on thier face when they see you play a plainswalker…

Remember always have fun while playing and lagh at your opponents mistakes… and lagh even harder at your own!

YAY im getting better at spelling! (Better I still cant spell Wirte <— only 50% of poeple can read that)

Thanksgiving card and the new Gatherer.

November 25th, 2008

Hello. I’ve been busy with school in the past few weeks, but now I have 5 days without school. Today, I’m going to be sharing a Thanksgiving themed card and looking at the new gatherer. I’m not going to spend too much time on Thanksgiving, because a little less than half of my visitors are not Americain, and Thanksgiving is an American holiday. Also, there isn’t that much to talk about. Soon, I’m going to be making a (hopefully) big post about Magic Workstation, but that’s not today.

Horn of Plenty

New Gatherer

if you don’t know what Gatherer is, you can use it to search for any card that has been released, or any card from a set that has been prereleased. It has recently been updated. Most of my card images come from Gatherer. Here’s the new version.

If any of these pictures are getting cut off on your moniter, you can click it to see it in a new tab. This is a known bug, and hopefully will be fixed soon.

To start, here’s the home page:

As you can see from the picture, I use Google for alomst everything. Mail, browser, and news. Anyway, let’s see some of the new features. The first new feature is that Gatherer can give you a random card if you click the random card button. I’m going to be demonstrating features with Black Lotus, which you should know.

Here is what you get if you type in Black Lotus and hit search:

There isn’t much new on this page, but there is a comunity rating, which I highlighted in yellow. I also highlighted the oracle card text, expansion sets, and artist, but they aren’t new features. Now, let’s see the sets and legality page.

This page shows you that Black Lotus was printed in Alpha, Beta, and Unlimited. It also shows that the card is banned in legacy, and restricted in vintage. There isn’t much to show in the languages page, because it was only printed in English. So, now let’s see discussion.

On this page, it shows the average rating among all people who rated the card, which I circled in red, and your rating, which I circled in blue. You need to have an account to rate a card, but you can look at the ratings of any card. I circled the comment section in dark green. Right now, there are no comments, but if you’re logged in, you can post a comment.

Now that I’ve shown you the card pictures, let’s see some of the search pictures. Here is the advanced search:

This works in a different way than the other gatherer. You can, of course do a simple search, but here, you can set filters. An AND filter means that the property MUST contain the term you enter. An OR filter means that if you have two OR filters, ONE of them must be included. A NOT filter means that the property must NOT contain the term you entered. Now let’s look at settings:

Here, you can chose your language, default results, number of results per page, what happens when you click the card, how it groups, and what happens when you select a card. I’m not going to look at the language page, because it’s included on this page.

That is the new gatherer. It looks like it will be much more efficient than the old Gatherer at finding cards for you. Happy Thanksgiving, and hopefully I’ll write again tomorrow.

Some abilities

November 20th, 2008

Yes i havnt gotten alot of time to post recently havent been on the computer for about a week. But I’m glad that I can go on in school yes, I’m on the computer in School! Ok now wouldnt it be good to have some of theres nice abilities? They’re not real but I would like them:

Ride {Type of creature}

You may attach this creature to target creature of {type} as though it was an equiptment. Add this card’s abilties and power and toughness to the creature. If one of the two creatures would be destroyed unattach this card.

Its loing but it will be really cool if you can have a nice dragon rider with when this creature is attached to a creature that creature gains triple strick!

Triple strike:

This creature deals first strike damage and double the combat damage it normally would deal.

This could be nice if you give it to a leviathan so they can make up for their bad moves.

Lastly

Ward:

This card cannot have a spell or ability played on it, if a spell or ability would it doesnt do anything.              Zach, that’s shroud                                                                                                                             -

 Calvin

Sorry Should’ve explained myself better… Shroud Creature cannot be TARGETED by a spell or abilitie. Ward Creature CANNOT HAVE a spell or abilitie played on it or (if its wrath of god) Does nothing. Wrath of god vs Shroud Hit and creature dies- Wrath of god vs Ward Nothing happends creature is happy!

November 18th, 2008

Titanic Ultimatum Strategy

November 16th, 2008

Hello! My post today is all about the card Titanic Ultimatum.

First, this is a 3 color card, so only Naya decks or 4 or 5 color decks will be able to use it.

There are three things to consider if you want to build a deck around Titanic Ultimatum. First, you’re going to want about 24 lands. This leaves 36 slots for normal cards.

The first thing is getting the mana to play it. Well, lucky you, it’s green, the mana accel color! You can use 4 Druid of the Animas to help you accelerate to 8 mana of the right colors. Another card you can use is Lush Growth. This won’t help you get more mana, but it will get you the right colors. Llanowar Elves is always a good card to use in a deck like this. Another thing that will help with colors is Jungle Shrine. Four of these will replace 4 of your lands.

Of course, you don’t want too much mana accel, or you won’t have enough room in your deck for anything else.

The second thing to consider is, when you have enough mana to play Titanic Ultimatum, and you have it in your hand, how long do you wait to play it? Well, you’re not going to play it when all your creatures are mana accel creatures that you tapped to play it. You’re going to want to be able to play some big creatures first, that will become bigger. There are a few cards that will help you here. Woolly Thoctar is a 3 mana 5/4 that will get a big boost from Titanic Ultimatum. If you’re holding Titanic Ultimatum, you can try to get 3 extra mana and play Naya Charm on the same turn. This will tap your opponent’s creatures, and hopefully end the game as soon as you play it. But, there is one more creature to play. The mythic rare Godsire. Not only will this benefit from Titanic Ultimatum, this will also make creatures that benefit from the card. (Notice the size of the image of Wolly Thoctar, a 5/4, compared to Godsire, a giant 8/8.)

Now, on to the third thing. You’ve played Titanic Ultimatum, and you have devastated your opponent, but somehow they still have 5 life. What do you do? There are two cards here that will help you a lot, if you’ve held Titanic Ultimatum long enough to have enough mana to use them. First, the turn before you play Titanic Ultimatum, play Cradel of Vitality. Because Titanic Ultimatum gives your creatures lifelink, one of your creatures will grow to gigamtic proportions even after the ultimatum wears off at the end of the turn. The second card is Soul’s Fire. There are 3 soul’s cards, but Soul’s Fire is the only one that there is even a chance that you’ll have enough mana to play it, and it will be useful enough. Soul’s Might costs too much, and Soul’s Grace gives you more life, which you already have from Titanic Ultimatum’s lifelink. Remember, it will be hard to have enough mana to play Naya Charm, Soul’s Fire, and the effect from Cradle of Vitality. You almost certainly won’t. You have to chose which one you need the most. If you only have 3 extra mana, and your opponent has enough life to survive the trample damage, but not the full damage, play Naya Charm and tap his/her creatures. (This is always true, even if you have more than 3 mana. If you’re in a position to kill your opponent, and your opponent is begging for mercy, it’s not a good idea to give any. If it’s a casual game, then you can do it to have fun, but never in a tournament game.) If he/she has enough life to survive either way, play Soul’s Fire after attacking. If you have 5 extra mana, attack, and if your opponent survives, play Cradle of Vitality’s effect, then play Soul’s fire. (That’ll probably finish them.)

So, the final deck list:

Titanic Fun

Lands

4 Jungle Shrine

8 Mountain

6 Forest

6 Plains

Creatures

4 Druid of Anima

4 Llanowar Elves

4 Wolly Thoctar

4 Godsire

Other Spells

4 Titanic Ultimatum

4 Lush Growth

4 Naya Charm

4 Soul’s Fire

4 Cradle of Vitality

If you have any suggestions to improve this deck, post it in the forums or as a comment.

Duel Decks

November 13th, 2008

Me and Calvin like he posted got Jace vs Chandra.

He beat me to the 100th post… And then to the duel decks… But ill still post anyway.

Chandra’s stratagy is to use big spells to attack the opponent swing in with alot of creatures and burn anything in her way. I have to say Chandra was well planned out.

Jace in the otherhands stratagy is to bounce and counter all the cards leathle while attacking effective agenst any deck but Chandra’s. They needed to make a blue deck that could stand up to a red deck. Me and calvin as he posted played games with both and each time jace lost. Its well planned out agenst red decks but its hard to deal lasting blows.

When playing each game Chandra should if the situation goes down to using mana for firebreather or casting a spell while the opponent has 2 or more untapped lands use firebreather it works alot better.

For jace at the beggining of the game your in trouble well more-so than near the middle and end of the game. It helps if you bounce back and trade with as many creatures as possible!!!! Then strick out with your flying creatures!

Thats all for now hopefully next time I will be able to post faster than calvin….

Games

Game 1:
I played Jace, Zach played Chandra.

I was able to get out a few creatures quickly, and attack for 4, but Zach quickly got the upper hand. Although I was able to counter his spells, he was eventually able to overwhelm me. He won with 16 life. Jace and Chandra never actually came out.

Game 2:
I played Chandra and Zach played Jace.

We had a very close game. I was desperatly trying ot get rid of all the cards in my hand to play Demonfire. I was able to play Soulbright Flamekin. I was going to die next turn no matter what. Zach had 11 life, and I had Fireslinger, soulbright Flame kin, and 9 mountains in play, and only Demonfire in my hand. This meant 9 damage to him. Then I realised I could use Soulbright Flamekin to get the extra 2 mana for 2 more damage. Now, I dealt him 10 damage with Demonfire. He thought he was saved, because I had 2 life and was going to lose next turn, but I tapped Fireslinger to kill him. I won with 1 life. No planeswalkers, again.

Game 3:
I played Chandra and Zach played a faeries deck.

Zach overwhelmed me with faeries. I died.

Game 4:

I played Chandra and Zach played his land destroy deck.

I was able to get out Hostility early in the game. We both interpreted it to mean you get the 3/1 creatures when anything deals damage. I got 127 3/1 elementals. I killed Hostility, and attacked. Zach died.

Game 3:

I played Jace, Zach played turn-taking deck.

I was able to get out Guile very early, and Zach got out Stuffy Doll. I played Jace Beleren, then I bounced Stuffy Doll back to his hand, he replayed it, I bounced it again. He played Beacon of Tomorrows. I unmorphed Willbender to change the target to me, so I gained an extra turn. I got out a lot of flying creatures, and attacked for lethal.

Game 4:
I used Jace, Zach used his land destroy deck.

Zach got very mana screwed. He had only 4 lands the entire game, and none of the right color. I got out Jace, and Zach gave up.

Final Verdict

So, which is better? In my opinion, Chandra is better. Sure, Jace is fun to play as, but I like Chandra better. But, you can vote for your opinion in this poll:

Jace vs. Chandra

100th Post!

November 11th, 2008

Hello! This is the blog’s 100th post! Today, I’m going to be posting the decklist of one of my decks. Zach hates it. It isn’t that good, but it is capable of causing the game to go on forever, and every once in a while end in a draw. I rarely win with it, but I do sometimes.

My White Deck

Lands

Plains                       22

The cards Zach hates most in this deck are Story Circle and Platinum Angel. If I get either out, I’ll probably win unless he can kill them.

Jund

November 9th, 2008

Hello. Sorry for the many days without posts from either of us.

Today, I’m going to talk a little about Jund. Jund is one of the 5 Shards of Alara, although you probably already know this. Its colors are red, green, and black.

Jund lacks the colors blue and white, so Jund is the chaotic shard. Jund is the only shard with dragons in the set. Goblins are at the bottom of its food chain. Jund is the shard that has the burn spells, and with all of its big creatures, it goes great with Naya, which shares 2 of the colors.

Jund’s keyword mechanic is Devour. On a card, devour would be printed like this: Devour (number)

The way devour works is that when you play a creature with devour, you can sacrifice any number of creatures. You can sacrifice as many or as few as you want. You can sacrifice all of your creatures, or none of your creatures. For each creature you sacrifice, the creature you’re playing gets (number) +1/+1 counters for each creature you sacrifice. In Shards of Alara, the highest devour number is 3. The way I use devour is with Rhys, the Redemmed and a few other token producers. The token producers make a lot of tokens, and then I double them with Rhys. Eventually, I get a devour creature, hopefully the devour 3 creature, and eat all of my tokens. I now have a huge creature on the feild. With this creature, if I catch my opponent off guard, I can destroy him in one turn, otherwise I can use it to pick off the blockers, one by one.

Jund’s mythic rare is Hellkite Overlord. Hellkite Overlord is an 8/8 with flying, hase, trample, regeneration (1 black and 1 green mana), and dragonbreath. (dragonbreath means (1red mana): This creature gets +1/+0.) Its mana cost is (G)(R)(R)(B)(4).

Jund’s planeswalker, of course, is Sarkhan Vol. It costs (R)(B)(2) and its ultimate ability gives you 5 4/4 dragon tokens. (with flying, of course.)
