Full Conflux visual spoiler

January 30th, 2009

The entire set has been posted multiple places. You can find it in Gatherer, or you can find it on a website that was posted in a comment, Magic: the Gathering Keryas. The advantage of the second option is that, unlike Gatherer, you can see all of the cards in front of you, or make a decklist out of them, neither of which Gatherer does for you. It should be obvious, but at MTG Keryas you have to chose the set. It’s not limited to Conflux, you can see any cards. You can also make a decklist with any cards, including Conflux cards.

Tomorrow is the prerelease, of course. Some of you are going tomorrow, some are going Sunday, and some of you will even go for the midnight prerelease tonight! You can find the worldwide prerelease location sheet here. The release parties are one week from now, and you can find that information here.

The prerelease and release foil cards: (Malfegor is the prerelease foil, Obelisk is the release foil.)

These are the Conflux booster packs, expansion symol, and booster boxes:

And the 5 intro packs:

Finally, the fat pack and its contents:

For anyone who is going, good luck and have fun at the Conflux prerelease!

Thornling confusion

January 30th, 2009

I’ve noticed that there are some Ebay auctions that are showing Thornling as a 4/5. There are others showing Thornling as a 4/4. Thornling is a 4/4, not a 4/5. For confirmation, look at the FAQ:

<!– /* Style Definitions */ p.MsoNormal, li.MsoNormal, div.MsoNormal {mso-style-parent:”"; margin:0in; margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:12.0pt; font-family:”Times New Roman”; mso-fareast-font-family:”Times New Roman”;} @page Section1 {size:8.5in 11.0in; margin:1.0in 1.25in 1.0in 1.25in; mso-header-margin:.5in; mso-footer-margin:.5in; mso-paper-source:0;} div.Section1 {page:Section1;} –>

Thornling

{3}{G}{G}

Creature — Elemental Shapeshifter

4/4

{G}: Thornling gains haste until end of turn.

{G}: Thornling gains trample until end of turn.

{G}: Thornling is indestructible this turn.

{1}: Thornling gets +1/-1 until end of turn.

{1}: Thornling gets -1/+1 until end of turn.

Thornling is a 4/4. How did this happen? Well, let’s look at the Ebay auction’s picture: (It’s not just one auction, it’s a few.)

That looks a lot like my picture:

thornling3

The only difference is, mine is a 4/4. Other than that:

- The Conflux symbol is cut off at the edges a little, in both

- There is no artist credit it either

- The number, while barely legible, is 95/145 in both.

- They both have the credit in the image (The faint watermark at the bottom of the image.)

So, what happened?

It looks like someone took my Thornling picture, when I had made it originally, when I thought it was a 4/5. I spoiled it that way, and later someone corrected me. Someone took the original spoiled version, posted it on Ebay, and other people took the same image.

Conflux statistics

January 29th, 2009

Now that the whole set has been released, and I have entered it into MSE, it’s time to post some statistics of the set. You can still download the visual spoiler here.

If you’re viewing this post in Google Chrome, the graphs are cut off at the end. Firefox does not have this problem. You’re best bet is viewing this post in Firefox. (IE users, it probably works, too, but I know it works in FF and I know it doesn’t work in Chrome.)

First, color. The graph doesn’t show any cards under colorless, it shows them under artifacts. It also shows colored artifacts there. It doesn’t show colored artifacts under the correct color, though. This graph, therefore is a little inaccurate.

color

The second graph is converted mana cost. It also shows the maximum and the mean CMC. The lone 10 is Progenitus.

cmc

The third graph is the number of colored mana symbols in the mana cost. The 10 is Porgenitus, again.

colored-mana-symbols

The next graph shows the number of cards of each type. (Artifacts and artifact creatures are seperate.)

supertype

The next graph is power. The 10 is Progenitus for the third time.

power

Now comes toughness. You can probably guess what the 10 is, but this time, there is an eleven. The 11 is Inkwell Leviathan.

toughness

The next graph is keywords. Flying has the most, and next is domain and trample, which both have 9.

keywords

Next is the number of words in the card. Extractor Deamon has the most, with 60.

legnth

Next, and last, is rarity. As expected, it’s 60-40-35-10.

Conflux FAQ

January 28th, 2009

Hello. The Conflux FAQ has been posted on the wizards website. You can download it here.

I’ve been looking through the FAQ for some of the rules questions I’ve had. The first quote I’ve copied is from a comment I posted this:

Card 4: Magister Sphinx
(Image) The card says “When Magister Sphinx comes into play, target player’s life total becomes 10.” This is what I posted:

If you’re about to lose, you are suddenly at 10 life. If your opponent is playing a life gain deck, it’s all nullified. If your opponent is at 20, and you have a wound reflection (Shadowmoor, rare, black, enchantment) in play, and you play this, you win. (If your opponent is at 20, and his life total becomes 10, he lost 10 life. I’m almost certian about this.) (I think I just found a combo!)

I got a comment saying that this was wrong, and that the life total becomes 10, and the opponent doesn’t lose the life. Now, look at this quote from the FAQ:
“For a player’s life total to become 10, what actually happens is that the player gains or loses the appropriate amount of life. For example, if the targeted player’s life total is 4 when this ability resolves, it will cause that player to gain 6 life; alternately, if the targeted player’s life total is 17 when this ability resolves, it will cause that player to lose 7 life. Other cards that interact with life gain or life loss will interact with this effect accordingly.”

The second quote is from an argument I had with Zach about Progenitus. I thought I could switch prison term to Progenitus because I’m not targeting it, and Zach thought I can’t do that. Here’s the quote from the FAQ:

“– Progenitus can’t be enchanted or equipped.”

It turns out I’m wrong about this one. I can’t enchant it with prison term, even switching it from another creature.

Nicol Bolas: a hint to the cost

January 27th, 2009

This post is just a small hint to how much Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker will cost. It’s going on Ebay for $30 right now, for delivery before the prerelease. I don’t know what the actual price will be, but that’s a hint.

Conflux: Early Review

January 27th, 2009

Now that all of the cards have been spoiled, what do I think of Conflux? Remember, this is an early review, before I’ve had a chance to actualy play with the cards. (I’ll write another review after the prerelese.) I’m splitting this into 4 categories, limited, constructed, multiplayer, and overall. My visual spoiler is still up, also.

Limited (8/10)

In limited, this set has a lot of commons that are dependant on using all 5 colors. This can be a good thing, if you have enough cards from your Shards of Alara packs to play all 5 colors. If not, you can end up getting too many 5 color commons and not being able to make your deck. If you do get all 5 colors, though, it will be great. You can play any rare you get. (8/10)

Constructed (9/10)

In constructed, the 5 color cards can only help you. If you can actually make a good deck around getting Progenitus into play (which Zach wants to do) you will have a powerhouse deck that can almost never lose. (Hint: Martial Coup) If you can play Megnaloth, and it doesn’t get countered or destroyed, that’s probably the end of the game. (Hint: Vexing Shusher, protective bubble!) There are many cards like that, which scream “KILL ME OR DIE!” and that can actually be used in constructed. Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker, although many people complained about it, is not as bad as some people seem to think it is. It isn’t as good as people were anticipating, so they complained. While it might be worse than cruel ultimatum, it’s a lot more fun. (Just imagine, cruel ulitmatum, which will instantly win if not countered, or Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker, which might be weaker, but at least there is a chance against it. Cruel Ultimatum is just cruel. (And yes, I do realise that that’s why it’s called Cruel Ultimatum) Nicol Bolas is fun, for both you and your opponent.)(9/10)

Multiplayer (9/10)

In multiplayer, play blood tyrrant. That’s all there is to it. OK, that’s not all, but it is a great card. Martial Coup will give you as many 1/1s as you have mana for, and it will kill everything else that isn’t indestructible. (Even if it has shroud, protection, etc…) This will leave th feild empty, and let you kill someone quickly. (And, if you’ve managed to make Blood Tyrrant indestructible, the kill would give it 5 counters. (Hint: If you’re playing 5 colors, which you obviously are because you have Blood Tyrrant and Martial Coup, Spearbreaker Behemoth(But if you have Spearbreaker Behemoth and blood tyrrant, and nobody else has anything, you’ve won anyway. (At least against one person.(I’m just doing this for more parenthesis(If you haven’t figured that out by now(How deep will I go?(Answer: 9(OK, now back to business))))))))) (9/10)

Overall (9/10)

Overall, I like this set. It seems like a fun set, especially if you manage to get out one of the many big creatures. (Or Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker.)  There are people who complain about every set, but I’m exactly the opposite. I like every set. This set is no exception. It could be better, but in my opinion, not by much. (9/10)

This is what I think of the set now. We’ll see how it changes after I’ve had a chance to play with the cards.

Full Conflux Spoiler

January 25th, 2009

Yes, rumor season is over, the whole set is now known! I’ve updated the file, and fixed some errors on it. (Some rares were marked as commons, and some commons were marked as uncommons.) You can download the whole file here. The file is 5.778 megabytes. EDIT 9:53 PM EST: If you’ve downloaded the spoiler before, there are some major errors. They are mostly fixed now. (The latest error caught was Thornling’s toughness. If it shows up as a 4/4, you have the latest version. There were a few other errors that were fixed, like the mana cost on Ember Weaver, the P/T of Hellkite Hatchling,  and the wording of sme cards.)

10 Mythic Rares:

apocalypse-hydra1

This was originally thought to be a rare, but it’s actually a mythic.

ethersworn-adjudicator

This is the final mythic. With it, Zach is going to destroy my white deck. With it, I am going to destroy his 5 color dragon deck. In fact, if nothing is done about it, it will destroy almost any deck. (Zach’s burn deck in immune.) Something will obviously be done about it, though. Oblivion Ring, burn, etc…

101 Conflux Cards!

January 22nd, 2009

The official total has reached 101… and surpassed it! There are 102 known Conflux cards. You can download the file here, as usual.

Homework kept me from posting until now. Today was one of those days when I was loaded with work, and I didn’t finish until 9:30 PM. I’ll make up for it by previewing six cards for you.

The first card I’m previewing today is a common. Not good, you might say. I want a rare! Don’t worry, I’ll get to that after the common.

Card 1: Scattershot Archer

scattershot-archer

The single green mana in the cost and the fact that this is a 1/2 already make it better than some creatures. But, it also has an ability that will destroy someone who is using a deck with a lot of flying… like fae. Bitterblossom tokens, time to meet your maker! (OK, their maker is Bitterblossom, but you get the point, right?) And this is COMMON!

Card 2: Telemin Performance

telemin-performance

This will be useful against one of Zach’s less used deck: his creatureless burn deck. Playing this will put the whole thing into the graveyard! And if he plays a deck with creatures, I get a chance to steal one! (I can imagine him playing with a deck that has the Progenitus he is planning to buy in it, and I steal one.)

Card 3: Mark of Asylum

mark-of-asylum

Wow. Zach’s burn deck really is taking a beating today. If I put this in my white deck, and get out this and Story Circle, I’m inveurnable from anything, assuming I keep enough mana untapped to stop him from hitting me.

Card 4: Magister Sphinx

magister-sphinx

MSE seems to have done a bad job formatting this card, but whatever.

Card 5: Soul’s Majesty

souls-majesty

This card is a good card if you want an excess of cards, in a Naya deck. Otherwise it’s not that good. (Jund can use it, if it needs to.)

Card 6: Cliffrunner Behemoth

cliffrunner-behemoth

Another bad formatting job by MSE. This card works if you’re playing a monogreen deck. It’s a 5/3 for 4, and if you happen to be playing a Shadownoor deck with hybrid cards, it’s very good. (Although that’s unlikely.) It’s good in a Jund deck, and it’s good in a Bant deck. Now play it in a Naya deck. It’s great! A 5/3 with lifelink and haste, for 4 mana!

Maelstrom Archangel, Charnelhoard Wurm, and a rules question

January 20th, 2009

Hello! There have been a ton of cards revealed. Ten today, plus Wizard’s official Meglonoth. As usual, you can download all 96.

Card 1: Maelstrom Archangel

maelstrom-archangel

Yes, it’s mythic number seven. This is a domain card, which thankfully can’t go into Zach’s Bant deck. It probably will go into his 5 color dragon deck, though. An extra creature in that deck is just what he needs for it.

Card 2: Charnelhoard Wurm

charnelhoard-wurm

This card is going straight into my Jund deck, obviously. It not only has trample, but when it uses trample to hit the opponent, you get a card from the graveyard.

Rules Question

In a game I was playing with Zach yesterday, Zach had out Shield Dancer:

Shield Dancer

If the image quality is too low, it says

2W: The next time target attacking creature would deal combat damage to Shield Dancer this turn, that creature deals that damage to itself instead.

It’s a 1/3.

I attacked with a 13/13 with trample, and Zach blocked with his Shield Dancer, and paid the cost. But, the creature has trample, so it would normally only deal 3 damage to Shield Dancer. The question is, does it deal 13 damage to itself or does it deal 3 damage to itself and 10 to Zach? There is no answer to this in Gatherer, so I’m going to make it a poll here.

EDIT: Well, the polls don’t seem to be working, so I put it in the sidebar instead. It does seem to be working in the sidebar, so please vote.
